What is Cub Scouting?
When you are a Cub at Bishops Waltham you will do lots of fun and exciting activities. You will join one of our two Cub Packs called Wolf Pack and Diamond Pack which meet in the evening (6.00pm to 7.30pm) at our Scout Hut on Hoe Road. As often as possible we get out and about around Bishops Waltham and the surrounding area.
Cub Activities
We normally meet once a week during term time for a Cub Pack evening where Cubs take part in a range of activities. We will start with a game and then take part in one or more activities based on the evening's theme.
Here are some of the things we do:
- Tracking on the Moors
- Cooking on fires
- Fire lighting
- Athletics
- Science experiments
- Puzzles and games (crystal maze)
- Visits to Church, the fire station and police station.
- Often we will go on hikes around Bishops Waltham, sometimes it will be at night in the dark.
Cub Badges
By completing some of the activities you will earn badges which you can wear on your uniform. Activity badges are worn on the left arm and cover a wide variety of things most of which you will do at Cubs and some of which you can do at home. For example, Cubs have earned their Artist, Athletics, Cycling, Navigator and Scientist badges.
Challenge badges are special badges which we work on together as a Cub Pack. The challenge badges are:
- Community Challenge
- Creative Challenge
- Global Challenge
- Fitness Challenge
- Promise Challenge
- Outdoor Challenge
- Outdoor Plus Challenge
Cub camps and sleepovers
We will often go camping as a pack or with other Cubs in our district. Sometimes we will stay overnight in the Scout Hut for a sleepover following a night hike. During the Summer term we will often go camping at a local campsite such as Lyons Copse.
What is a Cub Pack?
A Cub Pack is a section in a Scout Group that will meet once a week. Most activities are organized and run by an individual Cub Pack but at Bishops Waltham the two Cub Packs (Wolf Pack and Diamond Pack) will often join together to run a joint activity. For example a joint visit to the firestation, a joint camp or a hike.
The Cubs in a Cub Pack will be organized into Sixes which are named by the colour of woggle they wear. Each Six will have a Sixer as the most senior Cub and will be assisted by a Seconder, and will normally have three or four other Cubs to make up the complete Six.
The adult leaders of a Cub Pack will be given names based on Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book. Normally the Cub Scout Leader will be called Akela.
