Beavers celebrate 25 years
The new term has got underway and the Beavers have been very busy welcoming some new faces to the colonies and celebrating the 25th anniversary of the founding of Beaver Scouts.
They began with a games night. This allowed the new Beavers to get to know the existing ones, whilst having some fun and working towards their fitness challenge badges. The fun continued the next week with a joint colony meeting at Lyons Copse, the local Scout campsite. Here the Beavers were introduced to orienteering. Armed with only a map and their sense of direction they were tasked with locating a large number of coloured markers that had been hidden around the forest and fields of the campsite.
After this the Beavers had a quieter evening the next week, when they produced “Beaver Passports”, the passports featured everything you would expect, including photographs and spaces for stamps from the countries “visited” during future evenings with a world travel theme, such as the upcoming Chinese night.
More outdoor fun followed the next week, when the Beavers where sent on a mystery treasure hunt. Each beaver was given a selection of photographs of things from around Bishops Waltham and, with the aid of a map, went out to discover what the mystery objects were. At each secret location, a new letter was revealed and when they returned to the hut the Beavers were able to piece together the message and locate the “treasure” (a large bag of delicious sweets!).
The highlight of the term was the trip to Legoland, arranged to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Beavers. Over 7,000 Beavers from across the South of England descended on the park in order to celebrate. The Beavers enjoyed rides such as the Viking River Splash and Driving School, where the motoring skills of the Beavers were seen to be very good, with only a small number of crashes occurring! The Beavers then spent the afternoon admiring the impressive models in Miniland.
Many famous landmarks were seen, including Buckingham Palace complete with royal wedding celebrations, all made from Lego bricks. Favourites with the Beavers included the miniature representations of a race track, and spotting an assortment of Doctor Who monsters lurking outside the London scene!
This provided an exciting end to the celebrations, which began earlier in the year and was a fitting send off to some of the Beavers who are moving on to cubs this year.
