beaversBeavers celebrate 25 years

The new term has got underway and the Beavers have been very busy welcoming some new faces to the colonies and celebrating the 25th anniversary of the founding of Beaver Scouts.

They began with a games night. This allowed the new Beavers to get to know the existing ones, whilst having some fun and working towards their fitness challenge badges. The fun continued the next week with a joint colony meeting at Lyons Copse, the local Scout campsite. Here the Beavers were introduced to orienteering. Armed with only a map and their sense of direction they were tasked with locating a large number of coloured markers that had been hidden around the forest and fields of the campsite.happy_25th_birthday_beavers

After this the Beavers had a quieter evening the next week, when they produced “Beaver Passports”, the passports featured everything you would expect, including photographs and spaces for stamps from the countries “visited” during future evenings with a world travel theme, such as the upcoming Chinese night.

More outdoor fun followed the next week, when the Beavers where sent on a mystery treasure hunt. Each beaver was given a selection of photographs of things from around Bishops Waltham and, with the aid of a map, went out to discover what the mystery objects were. At each secret location, a new letter was revealed and when they returned to the hut the Beavers were able to piece together the message and locate the “treasure” (a large bag of delicious sweets!).

The highlight of the term was the trip to Legoland, arranged to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Beavers. Over 7,000 Beavers from across the South of England descended on the park in order to celebrate. The Beavers enjoyed rides such as the Viking River Splash and Driving School, where the motoring skills of the Beavers were seen to be very good, with only a small number of crashes occurring! The Beavers then spent the afternoon admiring the impressive models in Miniland.

Many famous landmarks were seen, including Buckingham Palace complete with royal wedding celebrations, all made from Lego bricks. Favourites with the Beavers included the miniature representations of a race track, and spotting an assortment of Doctor Who monsters lurking outside the London scene!

This provided an exciting end to the celebrations, which began earlier in the year and was a fitting send off to some of the Beavers who are moving on to cubs this year.

cubsCubs Bonfire Night Adventure

Cub Scouts from Diamond and Wolf Pack took part in a night expedition and sleepover last month on Bonfire Night. Starting at the Scout Hut, we set off on a hike on the many footpaths around Bishop's Waltham, with our torches lighting the way on the dark night. Fortunately the weather stayed fine and during our hike we had a great view of the bright fireworks being let off across Bishop's Waltham and the surrounding areas. After the recent rain the paths were very muddy but it was a mild evening and it didn't seem very long before we all finished the hike by returning across The Moors to the Scout Hut.

cubs_playing_games2Inside the warm Scout Hut supper was waiting for us and after changing out of our muddy clothes and boots we ate our hot dogs and drank our hot drinks. We had all brought our favourite board games and so we went upstairs in the Scout Hut and spent several hours playing games with each other, ranging from chess, Frustration, Giant Jeng
a to a complex game called Heroscape. Eventually, with midnight approaching, the leaders made the Cubs get ready for bed and we settled down on the Scout Hut floor after an exciting story from Chil.

The night went quickly and early the next morning we rose and had a filling breakfast of cereals and bacon butties before some more games upstairs until it was time to go home after the exciting night's adventure.

Scout Activitiesscouts

With the Splendour of the Isle of Wight Summer Camp still fresh in the memories of the Scouts, both the Gunners and Admirals Troops commenced the autumn program of events with a District Activity Evening at Lyons Copse.  The meeting’s events included rafting, assault course, traverse wall, low ropes, archery, shooting, and orienteering.  The evening culminated with a well-deserved hot dog.

The following week focused upon a foundation Scouting Skill – Pioneering.  After a couple of warm-up games, the Scouts displayed their rope handy work practising the Bowline, Sheep bend and numerous other knots.  The intent being that with these fundamentals mastered, they would then progress onto greater projects later in the term.

Hands-on manufacturing followed with the skilful manufacture of woggles and the intricate production of Lanyards utilizing Para cord and the Cobra Stitch; a most ingenious way of producing a unique and personalized key fob/buckle attachment.  Once the Leaders had mastered (!) the art of the Cobra stitch, the floor was open for works of art.

Who needs the Michelin Restaurant guide when the Scouts have a ‘cordon bleu’ cooking evening?  Equipped with a fixed budget, the patrol leaders purchased the required ingredients for a banquet of omelette followed by chocolate log pudding.  Needless to say, the various methods employed by some the patrols would have sent Gordon Ramsay into a foray of expletives but who’s to say experimentation is a bad thing?  Conscious that the Leaders would be judging the final offerings, guidance and tips were provided to the trainee chefs.  All in all, a great effort, Michelin rating 5!

A combined Admirals & Gunners evening followed; a patrol orientated Night Hike, combined with challenges en-route, followed by a Jamboree Over The Air (JOTA) joint sleepover.  Tasks during the hike ranged from the traditional skill-set of stretcher construction to crisp tasting (never knew so many different flavours existed) and Morse code.  Sticking with the communication theme, the weekend entailed the JOTA Jamboree.  This provided the Scouts with the opportunity to establish worldwide communication (e-mail and radio) with fellow Scouts; an attempt even being made to communicate with a Space Station!  Many thanks to the Amateur Radio Club.

The half-term concluded with yet another joint activity with Admirals; a Trafalgar Evening.  Bereft of any reference to ‘Captain Pugwash’, the ‘Senior Service’ or, for the Leaders, a ‘Rum Ration’, the Troops proceeded to put their recently acquired pioneering skills to good use with the construction of a freestanding mast complete with flag and mainsail.  In an attempt to emulate the definitive Royal Navy/Fleet Air Arm Field Gun Race the patrols re-enacted this classic naval tradition accompanied by a resounding cannon soundtrack that would have put the 1812 Overture to shame!  Thankfully no limbs were broken or fingers sliced with the ensuing excitement, a grand evening was had by all.  A fitting celebration of Trafalgar!

One of our elephants is missing

The Cubs in Diamond Pack have had a busy start to the Autumn term. We took advantage of the sunshine to get out and about the first few weeks, starting with a evening of cricket and other games on Hoe Road recreation ground.

The following week the Cubs learnt how to lay and follow a trail Cubs firing catapultmade out of natural materials such as twigs, stones and grass.

An unexpected report of animals going missing from Marwell Wildlife meant the Sixers and Seconders had to go out and lay a trail across the Moors which would lead the other Cubs to the hiding places of the escaped animals. The rest of the Cubs had to follow the carefully laid signs and find the animals along the trail. Fortunately the observant Cubs managed to find almost all the hiding animals, although when we returned to the Scout Hut we did find that one of the elephants had gone missing.

Has anyone found an elephant on the Moors in the last few weeks? It is about 3 inches long and made of plastic.

The weather stayed warm and sunny the following week and this time the Cubs were outside and using their pioneering skills to make large catapults.

Firing catapult

After building their sturdy contraptions they shot small projectiles to see how far across the football pitches they could reach. Taking turns they shot the projectiles further and further, helped by more confidence and the adding lots more rubber bands to the catapults.

The second competition was to accurately and reliably shoot a practice golf ball into a small net at a relatively small distance; however, as dusk had arrived, the dim conditions made it hard to see the target and the final result was 0/28 shots on target - I'm sure the Cubs would have had a better aim if they could actually see the target!

Emergency Communications at Bishops WalthamJOTA and JOTI Logo

JOTA and JOTI: 15th/16th October 2011

This Weekend! See 1st Bishop's Waltham Scouts JOTA and JOTI for more information and pictures taken during the weekend.

JOTA = Jamboree on the air. JOTA is an annual jamoboree during which Scouts and Guides all over the world speak to each other using amateur radio. Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are shared via the radio waves.  The International theme for JOTA this year is “Peace, Environment and Natural Disasters”. We shall be taking part in this by running as much as possible of the radio equipment from portable supplies and without use of electric lighting for the weekend (think gas lamps, battery power and glow sticks!).

JOTI = Jamboree on the internet. JOTI allows Scouts and Guides all over the world make contact with each other using the Internet. It is a real Jamboree during which Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are shared, thus contributing to the world brotherhood of Scouting. Most of the communication takes place in a chat network called IRC, the Internet Relay Chat. At Bishops Waltham we will have several computers set up in the Scout Hut for use on JOTI throughout the weekend.
