Recent Beaver, Cub and Scout Activities
Scouts
As usual, Gunners’ Scouts have had a full and varied programme. As part of their Creative Challenge they designed and built trailers to carry an egg safely, for three laps of a circuit, behind a remote controlled car. The trailers were built from a selection of Lego and Meccano. There were varying levels of success: one egg made it safely round all three laps, but others were less fortunate being hurled out of their trailers, or finding themselves crushed beneath an upturned trailer; and a few eggs just found themselves trapped as their vehicles became stuck on part of the course. Whilst the eggs suffered, the Scouts naturally had a thoroughly entertaining time!
Gunners’ have also been practising their golfing skills, with a variety of activities including “glow in the dark” golf (how far can you hit a small glowing ball with a golf driver across a pitch black field?), and indoor crazy golf.
More seriously, the Scouts have also been learning about mountain rescue and survival. They did a selection of quizzes including “What 8 items would you take with you, if you were stranded in a forest, after a plane crash” and “knife safety; what to do and what not to do with a knife”. They also did a mountain rescue simulation, learning what to do if someone is injured (in this case with a broken back) whilst climbing. The Scouts took different roles in the exercise, leaning how to work together as a team in an emergency.
Cubs
Diamond Pack Cubs have been having an active time this month with a variety of different events. During the very wet weather the Cubs went on a night hike one Saturday evening. The paths were very muddy but they managed to pick their way along the tracks before the rains came pouring down again. Twenty-three soggy Cubs arrived back at the Scout Hut, but soon they were all dried out and filled up with biscuits and hot dogs. They spent the rest of the evening playing a variety of board games until late into the night. Everyone slept very well that night, even most of the leaders and parents!
The Cubs have also put together an evening of entertainment for their parents and families. They rehearsed some short sketches and presented them in front of a packed Scout Hut to lots of laughter. Some of the parents also got to take part in one sketch which involved some Jungle related challenges presented by a pair of young Ant and Dec look-a-likes, in “I’m a Cub (Parent), get me out of here”! Challenges included eating raw chillies and lemon, and apple bobbing followed by retrieving marshmallows from a bowl filled with flour. I’m sure the Cubs would like to join me in thanking their very game parents for “volunteering”!
Diamond Pack also finished their community badge by making shoeboxes for the Samaritan's Purse Appeal, and learning about the history of Bishops Waltham with a fascinating talk from Eric Burbeck.
Beavers
Malak and Hawkeye Beavers went on a night hike from the Hampshire Bowman to the Scout Hut. To counter this healthy trek, they then had an un-healthy food session making marshmallow and sweet kebabs, popcorn and biscuits! These were enjoyed by all of the Beavers.
The Beavers were also very fortunate to have a visit from the Hampshire Air Ambulance Team, who explained what they did and why having a helicopter ambulance is so important.
The busy term continued with Malak Colony visiting the church to climb the tower, and of course, the term ended with the traditional Beavers’ Christmas party, full of games and with lots of delicious food! |

Scout Group activities in November 2009
Scouts
Gunners Scouts have been enjoying a variety of different activities this term, including cooking, hiking, acting and setting fire to things!
As part of their Global Challenge Award, the Scouts had an evening of cooking international cuisine. Split into small groups, they made a variety of dishes including chicken soup (real, home made; not just opening the can), fried aubergine and mashed sweet potato. They also attended a JOTA weekend, talking to other Scouts across the world by radio.
The Scouts celebrated bonfire night by making ballistas from sticks and bungees, and then testing their aiming skills by shooting flaming torches from them to ignite a bonfire.
Cubs
Wolf Pack Cubs have been working towards their home safety badge. They had a visit from the Police, who discussed with them the ways in which they can stay safe.
Cubs in Diamond pack are earning their Community Challenge Badge. They also did a “Scrapheap Challenge”, working in their Sixes to design and built cars out of junk. The completed cars were then raced down a track to see whose was the fastest, and which one would travel the furthest. Blue Six were victorious in both speed and distance!
Beavers
The Beavers have been doing their Friendship Challenge Badge. Hawkeye Beavers organised an evening of fun and games at Lyons Copse and invited Malik Beavers to join them. Both Colonies enjoyed meeting and making new friends.
The Beavers have also been learning about Diwali. They made decorative tea light holders and created sand drawings, and finished off by tasting some Indian cuisine |

Bishops Waltham Cubs at District Cub Camp
At the beginning of term both Wolf and Diamond Cub Packs from 1st Bishops Waltham joined in the fun at the Meon Valley District Cub Camp. Over sixty Cubs from Bishops Waltham, Shedfield and Swanmore had an exciting weekend camping at Lyons Copse in Shedfield. The Cubs arrived carrying their heavy kit on Friday evening and had barely settled in to their hike tents before they were sent into the woods to take part in wide games in the increasingly dark night. A series of games saw the Cubs running, hiding and searching for leaders in the undergrowth until it was time for supper.
On Saturday the Cubs took part in a wide range of activities including pioneering (making a stave and rope chair to race around a course against the clock), making and flying kites and racing across a bouncy castle assault course. There was a climbing wall and archery which are always favourites with the Cubs. One popular activity this year was cooking omelettes in plastic bags over an open fire (apparently the results were delicious). A campfire rounded off a tiring but exhilarating day.

On Sunday morning the Cubs were set a series of tasks around the large campsite. These tasks included making catapults, signalling using semaphore and playing water bomb volleyball! Finally the Cubs, exhausted but happy, finished the camp with the traditional grand howl around the flagpole. |
