Recent Beaver, Cub and Scout Activities
Scouts
As usual, Gunners’ Scouts have had a full and varied programme. As part of their Creative Challenge they designed and built trailers to carry an egg safely, for three laps of a circuit, behind a remote controlled car. The trailers were built from a selection of Lego and Meccano. There were varying levels of success: one egg made it safely round all three laps, but others were less fortunate being hurled out of their trailers, or finding themselves crushed beneath an upturned trailer; and a few eggs just found themselves trapped as their vehicles became stuck on part of the course. Whilst the eggs suffered, the Scouts naturally had a thoroughly entertaining time!
Gunners’ have also been practising their golfing skills, with a variety of activities including “glow in the dark” golf (how far can you hit a small glowing ball with a golf driver across a pitch black field?), and indoor crazy golf.
More seriously, the Scouts have also been learning about mountain rescue and survival. They did a selection of quizzes including “What 8 items would you take with you, if you were stranded in a forest, after a plane crash” and “knife safety; what to do and what not to do with a knife”. They also did a mountain rescue simulation, learning what to do if someone is injured (in this case with a broken back) whilst climbing. The Scouts took different roles in the exercise, leaning how to work together as a team in an emergency.
Cubs
Diamond Pack Cubs have been having an active time this month with a variety of different events. During the very wet weather the Cubs went on a night hike one Saturday evening. The paths were very muddy but they managed to pick their way along the tracks before the rains came pouring down again. Twenty-three soggy Cubs arrived back at the Scout Hut, but soon they were all dried out and filled up with biscuits and hot dogs. They spent the rest of the evening playing a variety of board games until late into the night. Everyone slept very well that night, even most of the leaders and parents!
The Cubs have also put together an evening of entertainment for their parents and families. They rehearsed some short sketches and presented them in front of a packed Scout Hut to lots of laughter. Some of the parents also got to take part in one sketch which involved some Jungle related challenges presented by a pair of young Ant and Dec look-a-likes, in “I’m a Cub (Parent), get me out of here”! Challenges included eating raw chillies and lemon, and apple bobbing followed by retrieving marshmallows from a bowl filled with flour. I’m sure the Cubs would like to join me in thanking their very game parents for “volunteering”!
Diamond Pack also finished their community badge by making shoeboxes for the Samaritan's Purse Appeal, and learning about the history of Bishops Waltham with a fascinating talk from Eric Burbeck.
Beavers
Malak and Hawkeye Beavers went on a night hike from the Hampshire Bowman to the Scout Hut. To counter this healthy trek, they then had an un-healthy food session making marshmallow and sweet kebabs, popcorn and biscuits! These were enjoyed by all of the Beavers.
The Beavers were also very fortunate to have a visit from the Hampshire Air Ambulance Team, who explained what they did and why having a helicopter ambulance is so important.
The busy term continued with Malak Colony visiting the church to climb the tower, and of course, the term ended with the traditional Beavers’ Christmas party, full of games and with lots of delicious food! |
